An Outline of the Theory of Legal Definition (2000)
This book has been published in Polish (the Polish title: Zarys teorii definicji prawniczej)
This is by far the most well-known of my books. It is based on my PhD dissertation. There are presented the types of legal definitions and models of defining in the law application process. The distinction between intra-linguistic and metalinguistic definitions are also pointed out. This approach turns out to be useful when the law is interpreted. Arguments for support the leading role of linguistic interpretation in applying the law, are developed. Instances where non-linguistic interpretation is admissible, are defined and distinguished. In the appendix, there are provided several examples of defining legal concepts by means of formal logic.
